Robbed of My Comment

How YouTube has become distinctly dystopian, or perhaps my perception of it has…

Something you’ll discover if you are a YouTuber, is the need for engagement to drive the algorithm, which in turn rewards you with views. It’s nothing new, it’s been around a long while now. Google love engagement metrics, those kinds of activities are the bread to Google’s butter. Data is the jam to their toast.

As a quick aside. Losing a comment that I’ve spent time writing is very annoying. I don’t like wasting effort. You’d be surprised to discover that most people consume content, they don’t do anything out of their way to have any opinion on it, and yet, comments actually drive content. You need people to make comments in order for it to get algorithm traction. So pissing off people who spend that extra time to throw you a bone is not a good strategy.

There are such things as spam filters. They can be over aggressive. If you’ve ever trawled through your email spam filter, you may on rare occasions find an old email that wasn’t spam and you wished you’d received.

You need full context to what I wrote, it might then galvanise you as to why the comment may have been auto-deleted. It doesn’t happen often to me, but on rare occasions it does. And it pisses me off. I don’t even get a warning any more from YouTube. It just gets proverbially zerged. Sometimes I am legitimately being a douche but at other times I feel that people are just far too willing to cushion themselves and avoid criticism. But as I say, you need a bit of context on this.

My date of comment 13th March 2024 (for the Americans 03/13/2024)

Channel in question; Karina McDaniels

Video; MechaRandom42 has lost the plot.

Original date of video upload; 19th July 2021 (A 07/19/2021)

Rough video synopsis;

This was a video overviewing the cancellation of MechaRandom42 following two events that led to a distinctly frosty outcome with regards to the “Fandom Menace”. The video went further into the Fandom Menace as a whole. The two particular events that caused Mecha to fall from grace were a live stream event where she went a degree “postal” about Brie Larson and perhaps more unpleasantly made an accusation that Zack Snyder was a poor father and may have incontrovertibly contributed to his daughter’s untimely passing at her own hand. The latter event was further compounded when MechaRandom42 failed to recant on her previous statement on no less than two occasions following.

Observations;

I noticed some odd things on this video. If you scroll down in the comments you will notice a bot/spammer has put LOL several times. This might be a reason that this particular video has become sensitive to comments in general. Also, this video is somewhat of an inflammatory style piece and is pitted against people. Corporations like to avoid that kind of drama where possible, so for whatever reason, this video may have been throttled for comment.

In addition, this video was two years old. Kind of a dead topic in some regard, as a lot of videos on YouTube, with any kind of “News” angle, become dead after a time. They aren’t what we might refer to as “Evergreen” content, this video had more shelf life because it provides contextual information. There might be bias to it, but it does help preserve some historical information from sources that may no longer exist. Videos get deleted and privated all the time on YouTube. All you need to do is go through all of your “likes” and see how many have either been “privated” or deleted.

My issued comment, to the best of my recollection;

Hi Karina, I thought you made a good summary of points here. I have stopped watching about 95% of the fandom menace, with the exception of Mr H and the Critical Drinker. I find the Fandom Menace to be hyperbolic and negatively charged most of the time. They drive topics into the ground. With regards to Mecha, I went to see her channel recently and my observation is that she has lost her focus. Among the videos is a rather alarming video where she is asking for help. Her comments section contains people who make rather easy dunks on her. I find it all rather sad. I am particularly annoyed with the Fandom Menace because there are some films that were universally panned by them but I ended up enjoying, and wish I’d seen at the cinema. I find the fandom menace to be tribal and I can’t get onboard with everything they applaud.

A rough justification for my comment;

I started in a complimentary tone about the video, as I wanted to know why Mecha had disappeared. I had noticed that she wasn’t appearing much anymore and suspected that she may have disappeared by way of cancellation. I never really watched her channel a great deal, I only knew her through a very minor relation to Doomcock. A channel I occasionally laugh at (because the overlord is hilarious at the very least). I liked her back in the day, and had noticed she’d been divorced from the main group. This video was useful as it did provide some added context that I was missing.

With regards to the Zack Snyder issue, I didn’t comment. I dislike the man intensely but I would agree with most that such a strong opinion is one that should not be shared. As much as I disliked Zack Snyder being a complete retard when he derailed the charity stream by Geeks and Gamers by having a full on spat with Jeremy and then proceeding to say something incredibly dumb at the start of the charity stream, I would not speculate or determine anything with regards to his tragic loss. It is not my place to say, nor to stir the pot.

I did not mention anything about the Jesse Miller explosion. Mostly because this video was the first time in seeing it. I have no distinct opinion on this.

I didn’t use any choice language that would be deemed offensive. So I am puzzled as to why nothing was posted.

Have I got form?

Probably. I do fall in a sphere that possibly antagonises left-think. I may have come in for flags before. On two occasions YouTube has prevented me commenting because it found my word choice to be “problematic” and rather than push my luck I opted to nope out.

As far as I know, I’ve only ever had one comment removed manually and I deserved it on that occasion.

Q: What was that about? Do you remember Jackson?

A: Yes, I sure do.

I think I also had one moderated and decided to stop having those videos recommended because of that rather arbitrary judgement. I will talk about that one after this example.

The comment I made that was manually removed by the creator;

YouTube Creator; TheGraveOne

Content Type; Computer Games

Specific Genre; Crusader Kings 3

Video: Abbasid Campaign, Finale Episode (30) Now not viewable.

I tried looking for it, but I think he didn’t like this video either as it was Episode 30 of the Abbasid campaign which looks to have been either set to “private” or deleted. It was a longer length video owing to having been created on Twitch and imported to YouTube. It was identifiable by the rather garish green “subscribers goal” and “0”.

The Comment as I remember it;

The Papacy looks like an erect whale penis.

Comment Justification;

I was angry. I’d enjoyed the series up to that point but the video he put out really took the sheen off his achievements. I remember it because he had massive problems conquering the Papacy. There is an option in CK3 where if you managed to control all of Italia (including Rome) you can dismantle the Catholic Papacy, and with that major decision complete the resolve of the Christians rapidly dissolves. It is a proper dirt in the eye to the Christians as you then continue to steam roll through the map with far less opposition. It’s a bragging right. The problem is, back then at least, it was quite hard unless you massively outnumbered the Pope’s forces or got lucky. Essentially because of Communion, the pope would sit on fat stacks of gold, and could call in hosts of mercenaries by the bucket load. A way to win in CK3 is to outnumber your opponent with the amount of knights. The Pope, who can draft lots of mercenary bands with his fat stacks, and who also sits on a pretty hefty fortress, has an unfair advantage in this regard. You have to attack him early, or when he is weak. Vikings are best equipped to take him out, thanks to their OP knights. Back in this time period, the Abassids were simply too generic to stand a chance, even with a metric ton of levies. If you are not following, you have to be there folks.

What I’d meant to write was;

You spoiled this series. Don’t do this again. If you reach a point where you are not enjoying the direction of the campaign anymore, leave it on a high note.

Why was this dumb comment especially bad?

Barely any other comments existed on this video. Therefore any prospective individual would have seen this douchey comment and think, uh!

He was justified in removing it and I was being a prick. I admit it. I stopped watching his videos after that, in my rage. I did miss the timelapse content he made but I found alternative with DoItForBruce which was superior in quality. I’ve only ventured back to his channel to take that screenshot. I won’t linger for content.

The comment that was moderated

This one bugged me a bit more, if I’m honest.

Content Creator; Papa Meat (Sister Channel of MeatCanyon)

Video; This Cup is Ruining Lives

In a few years, you will have erased this from your memory.

Upload Date; 24th Jan 2024 (A 01/24/2024)

Video Synopsis;

Papa Meat has been doing these “reaction” style videos for a while. I fucking hate them if I’m honest. Reaction videos are like what they say about jokes; the lowest form of wit. Unfortunately Papa Meat has got caught up with them. The thing is, I love MeatCanyon content, and I kind of got watching Papa Meat because it got recommended. I did watch one of the videos that split my sides because Papa Meat is a funny guy, he is twisted, but reaction videos as a thing is super cringe. I was going to fall out with it sooner or later, it just happened to be sooner.

This particular video was about the fad that is Stanley cups and how Americans bought them in their millions thanks to the viral genius marketing. I mean, I can’t fault the marketing, I do have a Honours Degree in Business Studies, but it is yet more crap that people follow Symbolic Consumption over. Yet more ultimate waste when the fad is done. Americans are a marketer’s wet dream, a comment I put on somebody else’s video that didn’t get deleted. Shock horror.

Comment;

I worry about you Americans. When the Apocalypse comes, rather than Nuka Cola, you’ll be buried in a sea of Stanley Cups. Stop buying tat!

Justification;

It was a Ronseal comment, in other words it does what it says on the tin. You’d have to be British to get that by the way.

Auto-deletion;

Now that I’ve looked into this a bit more I believe my comment was removed thanks to hitting a trigger word in Nuke. One Scottish YouTuber had one of his videos taken down because the word he was saying was very close to a certain word that describes an African American in a derogatory fashion, but actually due to the Scotch accent, he was a different word entirely.

Either it was that or the inflammatory, you Americans. I realise that Google, Alphabet and YouTube are all run by snowflake assholes, who mostly are American (or now claim to be) so I wouldn’t expect any less. I’m probably on a Google Subversive List right now. Americans have low cool, they always bite. They don’t take a jibe well. In Britain it is a term of endearment to have a bit of a jab at each other every once and a while, but Americans always see it as an attack, an affront. We naturally are a little cautious with Americans because of your low cool. In a sweeping generalisation, you don’t enjoy the “bants” because you’ve got low cool.

How did I know it had been moderated?

I had made a spelling mistake in the comment, so went to edit it. But when I’d finished my correction, it threw up an error message suggesting that the comment no longer existed, in a codey sort of way.

What was my reaction?

I opted not to watch anymore Papa Meat. That pissed me off. It was the final straw (In the cup, get it. Cup, straw…. …you suck..)

Also, you Americans really need to stop buying so much shit. It’s better for the planet, for your wallet, and for the structural integrity of your home. I’ve watched those hoarder programmes, they motivate me to throw shit away, and scratch myself. If you are laminating the original advertising card that goes round the girth of a product to preserve it, there is something wrong with you. I’ve just got to say that. That’s a sign of mental illness as is looking for hairs on your palms.

In Conclusion

A lot of this could be simply spam filters. When it is deleted almost instantly on a relatively fresh video it normally isn’t though. I can be a bit of a mad lad sometimes, I don’t deny that. But YouTube is quickly rubbing me entirely the wrong way. These corpos are sucking the life out of me, and people willing to please just so they can have ads inserted onto their shit heal content are bugging me too.

Do you remember that joy of cutting the cord? That was a shared experience folks. It’s dying. That nirvana is wrinkling up like a prune.

There are many issues that YouTube are making much worse now. I’m sure that we can all agree that the advertising has got out of hand thanks to their new CEO. I miss Susan, and I’d never thought I’d say that.

To the individuals who delete comments, or employ people to do so, sometimes there is a hidden criticism in there, that people weren’t happy to disclose, so instead they called you a poo poo head. Just sayin’. Maybe you should sort your shit out just a little.
